[texts]Rheological Evaluation of Surfactants with Potential Application as Divergent Agents
Viscoelastic surfactants are very useful in various oilfield operations, such as enhancing oil recovery and hydraulic fracturing and acidification. Because of the permeability differences in the rock reservoir, a large part of the fluid injected can migrate to undesired regions. Therefore, viscous fluids are used to modify the permeability of certain regions of the rock formation. The products added to the fluids that provide this characteristic are called divergent agents...

[texts]The effects of strain heating in lithospheric stretching models - Stanton, M.
The deformation by stretching of a continental type lithosphere has been formulated so that the problem can be solved by a continuum mechanical approach. The deformation, stress state, and temperature distribution are constrained to satisfy the physical laws of conservation of mass, energy, momentum, and an experimentally defined rheological response. The conservation of energy equation including a term of strain energy dissipation is given...

[texts]Nature of the South Pole on Mars Determined by Topographic Forcing of Atmosphere Dynamics - Colaprete, A.
Introduction: The observed Springtime (Ls approx. 200) surface albedo in the Martian southern polar region is shown in Figure 1. In general, the hemisphere west of Hellas is marked by relatively high values of surface albedo. In contrast, the hemisphere east of Hellas contains extensive regions of very low surface albedo. One of the brightest features within the western hemisphere is the South Pole Residual Cap (SPRC)...

[texts]Data Synchronization Discrepancies in a Formation Flight Control System - Ryan, Jack
Aircraft hardware-in-the-loop simulation is an invaluable tool to flight test engineers; it reveals design and implementation flaws while operating in a controlled environment. Engineers, however, must always be skeptical of the results and analyze them within their proper context. Engineers must carefully ascertain whether an anomaly that occurs in the simulation will also occur in flight. This report presents a chronology illustrating how misleading simulation timing problems led to the implem...

[texts]Computation of steady and unsteady quasi-one-dimensional viscous/inviscid interacting internal flows at subsonic, transonic, and supersonic Mach numbers - Swafford, Timothy W.
Computations of viscous-inviscid interacting internal flowfields are presented for steady and unsteady quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) test cases. The unsteady Q1D Euler equations are coupled with integral boundary-layer equations for unsteady, two-dimensional (planar or axisymmetric), turbulent flow over impermeable, adiabatic walls. The coupling methodology differs from that used in most techniques reported previously in that the above mentioned equation sets are written as a complete system and s...

[texts]Oceanic structures of the Earth and the North Depression of Mars: A comparison of the formation mechanisms - Milanovsky, E. E.
The system of contemporary oceans on Earth and the North Depression of Mars are quasi-symmetrical in reference to the centers of of the hemispheres. Both systems had been formed over the common megacycle of evolution of planets and their origin is likely to have similar features. The formation of the Earth's oceanic system within the South Hemisphere seems to have proceeded in three stages: (1) the formation of a network of passive rifts at the center of the Gondwana; (2) the formation of the sy...

[texts]Arc-Jet Flow Characterization - Fletcher, Douglas G
Arc-jet facilities have been used extensively to evaluate materials for use in the thermal protection of aerospace vehicles, from Apollo spacecraft and the shuttle to the X-33 and the X-34. Although arc-jet tests are indicative of how well a material will perform in extreme aerothermal heating environments, it has not been possible to directly relate arc- jet test results to flight applications. The main obstacle has been an inability to determine the total enthalpy of the nonequilibrium arc-jet...

[texts]Lithospheric strength of Ganymede: Clues to early thermal profiles from extensional tectonic features - Golombek, M. P.
While it is generally agreed that the strength of a planet's lithosphere is controlled by a combination of brittle sliding and ductile flow laws, predicting the geometry and initial characteristics of faults due to failure from stresses imposed on the lithospheric strength envelope has not been thoroughly explored. Researchers used lithospheric strength envelopes to analyze the extensional features found on Ganymede...

An analysis was conducted to assess methods for, and performance implications of, cooling the passages (tubes) of a pulse detonation-based combustor conceptually installed in the core of a gas turbine engine typical of regional aircraft. Temperature-limited material stress criteria were developed from common-sense engineering practice, and available material properties. Validated, one-dimensional, numerical simulations were then used to explore a variety of cooling methods and establish whether ...

[texts]Chimera: A grid-embedding technique - Benek, J. A.
A three-dimensional chimera grid-embedding technique is described. The technique simplifies the construction of computational grids about complex geometries. The method subdivides the physical domain into regions which can accommodate easily generated grids. Communication among the grids is accomplished by interpolation of the dependent variables at grid boundaries. The procedures for constructing the composite mesh and the associated data structures are described...

[texts]The Heart Mountain fault: Implications for the dynamics of decollement - Melosh, H. J
The Hart Mountain docollement in Northwestern Wyoming originally comprised a plate of rock up to 750m thick and 1300 sq kilometers in area. This plate moved rapidly down a slope no steeper than 2 deg. during Early Eocene time, transporting some blocks at least 50m from their original positions. Sliding occurred just before a volcanic erruption and was probably accompanied by seismic events. The initial movement was along a bedding plane fault in the Bighorn Dolomite, 2 to 3 meters above its cont...

[texts]ASTM/NBS basestock consistency study data (Volume NBS Special Publication 661) - Weeks, S. J

Keywords: ASTM and NBS co-sponsored a Basestock Consistency Study (BCS) to assess the quality consistency of lubricating base oils. This study, which is the first of its kind, will impact on developing basestock characterization methodology and on efficient utilization of energy resources as well as their conservation through recycling. The purpose of this publication is to present the ASTM/NBS BCS data for data analysis. Monthly production samples from six re-refiners and four refiners were analyzed by 14 laboratories for a 13 month period. The results of over 55 tests are divided according to six major categories: rheology, physical properties, chemical properties, hydrocarbon type analysis, general performance tests, and oxidation and wear bench tests. The data are presented in tabular and grphical form, which is quite amenable to further data analysis
